Acne is the single most common concern we hear about — and the one surrounded by the most bad advice. Here's what holds up.
Ingredients worth your money
- Salicylic acid (BHA) — oil-soluble, so it gets inside the pore. Best for blackheads and congestion.
- Benzoyl peroxide — kills acne bacteria directly. Very effective on inflamed spots. Start at 2.5%; higher isn't better, just more irritating.
- Retinoids — the strongest long-term option. They stop pores clogging in the first place.
- Niacinamide — calms redness and regulates oil. Gentle enough for daily use.
- Azelaic acid — treats both the spot and the mark it leaves. Safe during pregnancy.
What doesn't work
Scrubbing harder. Alcohol-heavy toners. Drying your skin out to "dry out" the spot — that triggers more oil, not less. Toothpaste. Changing your entire routine every two weeks because nothing worked in ten days.
Timelines, honestly
Surface spots respond in one to two weeks. Real change in how often you break out takes eight to twelve weeks. Post-acne marks take three to six months. Consistency beats intensity every single time.
The quiet saboteurs
Pillowcases you don't change. Your phone screen. Picking — which turns a spot that would have faded in days into a mark that lasts months. And over-treating: five actives at once damages the barrier, and a damaged barrier breaks out more.
Take the assessment and we'll build an acne routine that fits your skin and your budget.
